GB/T vs CCS2: Differences and Why EV Adapters Cost More
What is the difference between GB/T and CCS2? Learn how the connectors and protocols differ, why they can't connect directly, and how to choose the right adapter.

Short answer: The core difference between GB/T and CCS2 is that each uses a different connector and a different communication protocol between the charger and the car. That is why a car with a GB/T port cannot charge directly from a CCS2 charger and needs an adapter. It also explains why adapters cost so much, especially DC adapters.
Charging standards differ from region to region, which matters to anyone importing an electric car or owning a car built for the Chinese market.
GB/T vs CCS2 at a glance
| Aspect | GB/T | CCS2 |
|---|---|---|
| Main region of use | China | Europe, the Gulf and other regions |
| Port design | Two separate inlets: one for AC and one for DC | One combined inlet for AC and DC |
| Digital communication in DC charging | CAN signals | PLC signals |
What is GB/T?
GB/T is China's national charging standard. It defines connector dimensions, voltage, current and how the charger and the car communicate. Cars built for the Chinese market rely on it. It supports both AC and DC charging, but through two separate inlets.
What is CCS2?
CCS2 (Combined Charging System, version 2; see the overview on Wikipedia) is the most widespread fast-charging standard in Europe, the Gulf and other regions. It combines AC and DC in one inlet, based on a Type 2 connector with two extra pins for DC, and it supports high-power charging.
Why can't a GB/T car plug into a CCS2 charger directly?
Two differences prevent it:
- Mechanical difference: the port shape and the number and layout of the pins differ, so one does not fit into the other.
- Digital difference: the charger and the car verify each other before power flows. GB/T communicates over CAN and CCS2 over PLC. Without translation between the two, charging cannot start safely.
An adapter sits between the two sides: it connects to the CCS2 charger's gun and presents a GB/T plug to the car. We carry the CCS2 to GB/T DC adapter up to 300 A, the 250 kW CCS2 to GB/T adapter with internal battery, and the Type 2 to GB/T AC adapter.
Why are adapters so expensive?
An AC adapter is usually a simpler part. A DC adapter contains electronics that translate communication between the charger and the car, which is why its price is higher:
- Communication translation: circuits that control voltage and current and convert signals between CAN and PLC.
- Protection systems: protection against overheating, overcurrent and short circuits, because currents in fast charging are high.
- Build durability: materials and connectors that withstand repeated use, heat and outdoor conditions.
- Testing and certification: a trustworthy adapter goes through safety tests and certifications such as SASO and IEC 62196, which is part of its cost.
- Brand compatibility: battery management systems (BMS) differ between brands, so some adapters are made for specific brands.
Benefits of an adapter for EV owners
- Access to a wider charging network: a car with a GB/T port can use the widespread CCS2 stations through the right adapter.
- Less range anxiety: it is easier to find a suitable charger on long trips.
- Battery protection: a tested, compatible adapter regulates the flow of power between the two sides correctly.
How do you choose the right adapter?
Check these points before you buy:
- Your car's port type: confirm whether you need an AC or a DC adapter, and which GB/T version your car uses.
- Maximum power: check the voltage, current and power in kW that the adapter supports. Remember that real charging speed is set by the weakest link among the car, the charger and the adapter.
- Brand and model compatibility: some adapters are designed for specific brands because battery management systems differ.
- Safety certification: ask for proof of approval, such as SASO and IEC. Avoid cheap, undocumented adapters, because they put the battery and the car at risk.
- Warranty and technical support: choose a seller that offers a warranty and after-sales support.

Frequently asked questions
Can any adapter work with any car?
No. The adapter must match your car's port and the supported protocols, and sometimes your car's brand and model because of battery management systems.
Does the adapter affect charging speed?
Yes, it can limit it. Real speed is set by the weakest link among the car, the charger and the adapter, and it may be lower than the adapter's own rated power.
Can an adapter damage the battery?
A certified adapter that is compatible with your car is designed to protect it. Uncertified adapters may lack the necessary protection systems.
What is the difference between an AC adapter and a DC adapter?
An AC adapter connects the AC charging port and is usually simpler and cheaper. A DC adapter handles higher currents and voltages and translates communication between the charger and the car, so it costs more.
Where can I find CCS2 chargers in Saudi Arabia?
DC fast chargers that support CCS2 are found in major cities and along some highways. Check the operator's app, such as EVIQ, to confirm the connector type and power before you go.
